As September unfolds, we are reminded of two extraordinary figures whose lives continue to shape our mission: Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, whose Feast Day is September 9 and St. Vincent de Paul, whose Feast Day is September 27. Their examples call us not only to honor their memory, but to live their legacy with courage, creativity, and love.

Frédéric Ozanam was not yet 20 years old when he responded to a challenge from his peers who questioned what the Catholic Church was doing for the poor. His answer was not a speech or a debate – it was action. He gathered a few friends and began visiting families in need, bringing food, clothing, and compassion. What began as a student’s act of faith has grown into the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a worldwide movement of more than 800,000 members serving millions of people every year.

St. Vincent de Paul, whom Ozanam chose as the patron of the Society, had already embodied this mission centuries earlier. Known as the “Father of the Poor,” Vincent recognized Christ in the marginalized and devoted his life to both organized charity and systemic change. He taught his followers that it was not enough to give alms – we must also work to understand the root causes of poverty, to organize for justice, and to love the poor as brothers and sisters. His words still echo in our hearts today: “Charity is the cement which binds communities to God and persons to one another.”

At St. Vincent de Paul, we continue to carry their torch. Each visit to a neighbor in need, each pantry box shared, each supportive word offered is an expression of this Vincentian legacy. Every time we listen without judgment, accompany a struggling family, or advocate for dignity, we are saying “yes” to the same call that Frédéric and Vincent answered.

But this legacy is not simply something to admire – it is a call to action. Ozanam and Vincent did not settle for comfort; they stepped into the hard places where suffering lived. They were bold in their faith and unafraid to love radically. And they call us, as Vincentians, to do the same.

This month, as we celebrate their feast days, let us recommit ourselves to our Vincentian vocation. Take a quiet moment to reflect: How is God calling me to better serve my neighbors in need today? Let us further ask:

  • How can I grow in seeing Christ more clearly in every neighbor I serve?
  • Where is God calling me to stretch beyond what feels comfortable in order to serve with greater love?
  • How can my Conference work together not only to relieve immediate needs, but to bring lasting hope and change?

Our legacy is alive only if we live it. The poor are not served by our admiration of Vincent and Ozanam – they are served when we roll up our sleeves, open our hearts, and allow Christ to work through us.

As we honor our founders this September, may we not only reflect on their example but take up their challenge. May our answer, both individually and collectively, be one of faithful action, courageous love, and Vincentian service that continues to shape Georgia today and for generations to come.

Together, let us build a legacy of service that honors the past, strengthens the present, and ensures that no neighbor ever walks alone.
