Charlene is the kind of person who works hard, plans ahead, and takes pride in providing for her family.

As a single mother of three children, she carefully managed her finances, paid her bills on time, and worked diligently as a hairstylist to create a stable future. Through discipline and determination, she had even managed to build a savings cushion for unexpected expenses.

Then an unexpected medical setback changed everything.

Earlier this year, Charlene underwent a necessary surgery, expecting it would improve her health and allow her to continue caring for her family. Instead, complications resulted in damage to her arm, requiring extensive physical therapy and preventing her from returning to work as quickly as she had hoped.

For a hairstylist whose livelihood depends on the use of her hands and arms, the impact was devastating.

Unable to work and with no income coming in, Charlene began relying on the savings she had worked so hard to build. Those funds helped cover her family’s expenses for a time, but as the weeks stretched into months, the financial pressure grew.

By April, she had exhausted much of her savings and was falling behind on rent, utilities, and other essential bills.

What made the situation even more difficult was that she had no family nearby to turn to for assistance. Despite doing everything right and making responsible financial decisions, circumstances beyond her control had left her struggling to stay afloat.

That’s when St. Brigid connected Charlene with St. Vincent de Paul.

Through the generosity of donors, assistance was provided to cover Charlene’s April rent, utilities, and car payment. Volunteers also worked with her credit union to negotiate additional flexibility by moving outstanding debt into the loan arrears, helping relieve some of the immediate financial burden and giving her valuable time to focus on recovery.

The support provided more than financial relief.

It gave Charlene peace of mind, stability for her children, and the opportunity to focus on healing without the constant fear of losing her housing.

Stories like Charlene’s remind us that many families facing hardship are not irresponsible or unprepared. Often, they are hardworking people who encounter a series of circumstances they could never have anticipated.

Thanks to the compassion of donors and volunteers, Charlene and her children were able to weather a difficult season and continue moving forward with hope for brighter days ahead.
