Holy Spirit Conference: Answering the Call for Help
Last summer, a young teacher’s life took an unexpected turn. Within a short span of time, Mitchell lost a money order intended for rent and was then involved in a serious car accident that totaled his vehicle.
What began as a difficult season quickly became a crisis.
Without transportation, keeping up with expenses became increasingly difficult, and by August, he had been evicted.
The months that followed were challenging. He moved in with his brother’s family, sharing space and expenses while continuing to teach elementary school during the day and coach high school sports after school. Without a car, he relied on walking, public transportation, and occasional rides to get wherever he needed to be.
He visited food pantries, purchased clothing from thrift stores, and did everything possible to live within his limited means.
Yet what struck Vincentians most when meeting him was not discouragement, but gratitude and determination.
Despite the hardships, he spoke openly about how the experience strengthened his faith and taught him how to seek out community resources he never imagined needing. Rather than focusing on what he had lost, he remained focused on moving forward.
Recently, a new opportunity opened.
Working alongside St. Vincent de Paul, he qualified for the Metro Atlanta Rehousing Initiative (MARI), a program that helps individuals and families transition back into stable housing by assisting with move-in costs. Through this partnership and other community support, he secured a modest condominium where utilities are included in the rent, making his monthly budget manageable once again.
One final obstacle remained: covering the remaining portion of his move-in expenses.
With assistance closing that final gap, he was able to secure housing and truly begin again.
Afterward, he shared that he never expected anyone to answer his call for help.
His humility, radiant smile, and positive spirit remained intact throughout the journey. In fact, spending time with him left everyone encouraged.
Today, with steady work, careful budgeting, and unwavering determination, he is firmly on the path toward rebuilding his future—a reminder that even during life’s most difficult seasons, a helping hand offered at exactly the right moment can make all the difference.
