Holy Spirit Conference: A Future Worth Fighting For
Lester, a young man in the Holy Spirit Conference community, reached out for help while facing the very real possibility of losing his home.
For months, he had been working tirelessly toward a brighter future. Through the end of summer, Lester balanced two jobs while attending school full-time, pursuing a degree in mortuary science. His goal was simple: build a stable life through education, hard work, and determination.
In September, he made the difficult decision to reduce his workload to one full-time job so he could focus more fully on his studies and continue moving toward his career goals.
Then, in early November, everything changed.
Lester was seriously injured in a vehicle accident while working—an accident that was not his fault. The injuries required hospitalization and an extended recovery period, preventing him from returning to work. Although legal negotiations are underway to recover lost wages, the assistance has not been enough to cover all of his expenses while he heals.
Despite the challenges, Lester continued to do everything he could to stay afloat.
He lives simply and carefully manages every dollar. His apartment is modestly furnished, and he has always worked hard to keep his bills current. But with his income suddenly interrupted, rent began to fall behind and eviction proceedings quickly followed.
As neighbors around him were being evicted, Lester feared he might soon experience the same fate. He worried that everything he had worked so hard to build could disappear overnight.
When Vincentians visited, they brought groceries, shared community resources, and helped close the gap needed to pay his rent balance and stop the eviction process.
The relief was immediate.
For the first time in weeks, Lester could focus on healing and continuing his education rather than wondering where he would sleep.
Afterward, he shared:
“I never thought I would get help from anyone and didn’t know what to expect. I never imagined someone would answer my call. Thank you for all you do for God’s people. I pray God blesses you and your organization.”
Lester’s story is a reminder that many neighbors facing hardship are not looking for a handout—they are working hard, pursuing their goals, and doing everything possible to create a better future. Sometimes an unexpected crisis simply creates a gap that cannot be crossed alone.
Thanks to the compassion of Holy Spirit Conference Vincentians, Lester was given the support he needed to remain housed, continue his recovery, and stay focused on the future he has worked so hard to achieve.
