A Lifeline During a Medical Crisis
Rebekah’s Story
For years, Rebekah worked hard as a truck driver to provide for her family. As a single mother divorced for over a decade, she carried the weight of supporting her sons largely on her own. Although there was a court order requiring her ex-husband to pay child support, the assistance never came.
Earlier this year, Rebekah made what she hoped would be a simple medical decision. Wanting to save money, she traveled to another state for surgery. But shortly after the procedure, serious complications arose.
“The surgery went terribly wrong,” Rebekah shared. “I was scared and in so much pain.”
After returning home, her condition worsened, and she was rushed to Emory Hospital for emergency treatment following a severe internal bleed. Doctors initially feared it was a blood clot. Rebekah spent more than two weeks hospitalized and required seven units of blood to save her life.
Though she thankfully avoided additional surgery, her recovery has been long and difficult. She returned home with a wound care machine to help heal a surgical incision that had not been properly closed. Unable to work during recovery, Rebekah quickly fell behind on rent and feared losing the home she shared with her sons.
That’s when she turned to St. Vincent de Paul Georgia for help.
SVdP provided rental assistance, helping Rebekah remain safely housed while she focused on healing and planning her return to work.
“I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the compassion, kindness, and genuine care you showed my sons and me during one of the most difficult seasons of our lives,” Rebekah wrote in a letter to SVdP.
Rebekah hopes to return to work soon and continue rebuilding stability for her family. Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, families facing unexpected medical crises can receive the help they need to remain safe, stable, and hopeful for the future.
