A Neighbor, A Friend, A Family

For Vincentian Pat Fischer and the members of Holy Spirit Conference, Miss J. is much more than a neighbor in need. Over the years, she has become part of their St. Vincent de Paul family.

Living on Social Security, Miss J. usually manages to get by. But there have been seasons when life became overwhelming—when her mother was dying, when unexpected home repairs piled up, or when winter heating bills climbed higher than she could handle alone.

During those difficult times, Pat and fellow Vincentians from Holy Spirit Conference walked alongside her, helping with groceries, utilities, and, just as importantly, companionship, encouragement, and prayer.

Recently, a difficult winter brought new challenges. Freezing temperatures caused pipes to burst, her home became difficult to heat, and electric bills soared as she tried to keep just one room warm with space heaters. Even then, she quietly managed on her own for weeks before finally reaching out for help with her utility bill.

When Pat and other Holy Spirit Conference Vincentians visited her at the end of December, they found themselves talking in her car because the house was simply too cold to sit inside.

They were able to help cover her electric bill and bring groceries and toiletries—small acts of support that made a meaningful difference. As always, Miss J. was deeply grateful.

What stands out most to Pat is not the challenges she faces, but the way she remembers the people who have walked alongside her through them.

She remembers every Vincentian who has visited her.

She asks about them by name.

She recalls the conversations, the prayers, and the kindness shown during some of the hardest moments of her life.

She calls the Vincentians her “angels.”

And despite the difficulties she continues to face, her own joy is contagious. Every visit leaves Pat and the Holy Spirit Conference volunteers encouraged as well, reminding them that sometimes the greatest gift they can offer is not a check, a grocery bag, or assistance with a bill.

Sometimes the greatest gift is simply showing up.

Miss J.’s story is a beautiful reminder that when Vincentians walk beside their neighbors through life’s challenges, they do more than meet immediate needs—they create lasting relationships built on compassion, dignity, friendship, and hope.
