When Giving Up Wasn’t an Option
Valerie, a single mother of two high school-aged children, saw her life change in an instant after a serious car accident left her unable to work for several months. Without sick pay or health insurance, she quickly fell behind on rent and was forced to move in with her sister. When unforeseen circumstances led to another eviction, Valerie and her children found themselves facing an unimaginable reality. For nearly a year, they moved between extended-stay motels and, at times, slept in their car, doing everything they could to stay together and survive. Even during this difficult season, Valerie never gave up. Determined to create a better future for her family, she held on to a temporary job that eventually became a permanent position with benefits. Yet despite her hard work, the high cost of motel living made it nearly impossible to save enough money for a home of her own.
That changed when Valerie was accepted into St. Vincent de Paul Georgia’s Motel to Home program. After months of uncertainty and instability, Valerie finally received the opportunity she had been praying for. With assistance covering her security deposit and a portion of her first month’s rent, she and her children were able to move into a safe and stable townhome. For the first time in a long time, her children had a place to unpack their belongings, sleep in their own beds, and experience the comfort of knowing where they would wake up each morning. The support didn’t stop there. Through financial education and credit repair coaching provided by the program, Valerie gained the tools and confidence to rebuild her future. She created a family budget, began saving toward the purchase of a reliable vehicle, and steadily improved her credit score—turning what once felt like an impossible situation into a pathway toward lasting stability.
Today, Valerie and her children are thriving in their home, surrounded by stability, opportunity, and hope for the future. She continues to work hard and is now on a clear path toward long-term financial security and a promising job promotion.
